Tim said in student days he often wondered
if not meeting kindred spirits
meant he was too weak, too weird
In the ending he gave the answer 10 years later:
No. Because they hadn't appeared yet.
My take
isn't find kindred spirits first, then act
but meet them while acting
For me, flat life doesn't fit
Desire is large, ideals high
yet these years little realized
Of course I could lower expectations and manage desire
live comfortably for sure
But that's not what I want—can't agree so can't do
They say success is effort plus luck
I seem always chasing luck
like finding a comfortable state, hoping flow breaks all difficulty
not forcing myself, following feel and interest
rarely forcing long stretches of work
...
Effort share is truly small—more quit while ahead, rest when tired
But I've found I'm not luck's darling or gifted
Relying on luck these years proved can't get things done
Too many smart people have better luck/background/environment/safety nets
So why leave opportunity for me?
Worse at luck, not enough at effort either
So still must pour hard work into effort
Want hard-metric titles in hand
means walking hard side paths most people skip
At the turning point where others quit
in the obscure corners others scorn
when others feel "good enough"
grit teeth, hold a bit longer
Most people want effortless success
but social resource ranking climbs by stepping on competitors
Understand that
Compared with my white moonlight, her college honors fill pages
In any era I probably wouldn't match her effort
Truly sweating with shame
